Toxorhynchites, also called elephant mosquito or mosquito eater, is a genus of relatively colorful mosquito. It does not consume blood. Adults are easily recognized by their large body size and strongly bent proboscis. The body is covered with brightly colored iridescent scales and the posterior abdominal segments have lateral scale-tufts.
Most species occur in forests. Their larvae prey on the larvae of other mosquitoes. Males and females both feed exclusively on nectar and other sugary substances.
The adults are active during the day.
